Tencha, the raw ingredient for matcha, comes from young shoots that sprout all at once around April each year. The shoots are covered to block direct sunlight. Shielded from the sun, they develop their umami in the gentle light and produce matcha’s distinctive aroma.

Morihan’s Tea-Making Tradition, Rooted in Uji and Ogura

Uji, Kyoto, has made its mark on history as a producer of fragrant, high-quality tea. Since 1836, Morihan has made its living from tea in Ogura, Uji, a region renowned for gyokuro and matcha.

Having won the National Tea Judging Skills Competition twice, our tea master is one of Japan’s finest in both name and reputation. We are dedicated to making consistently high-quality Japanese tea, selecting only the finest tea leaves and proactively adopting new technologies. We continue to pursue “trusted tea quality” and “contributing to a fulfilling life through tea.”
