Ryukakusan is a throat medicine whose main ingredients are herbal medicines (Platycodon root, Senega root, Apricot kernel, Licorice) that activate antitussive and expectorant effects.
The inner surface of the human trachea is covered with ciliated cells, whose cilia constantly vibrate at a speed of about 1,500 times per minute, and the inner wall of the trachea secretes mucus. Dust, dirt, bacteria, and other particles that pass through the airway are trapped in this mucus and expelled from the body by the vibration of the cilia. This is a natural purification function.
When the throat is overused, smoking, or inhaling polluted air, inflammation occurs causing pain, phlegm accumulation, and a decline in the purification ability, resulting in coughing distress. Taking Ryukakusan at such times, the active saponin glycosides in Platycodon root and Senega root increase mucus secretion from the tracheal surface, activate ciliary movement, remove phlegm, suppress cough, and alleviate inflammation.
