"Gohan no Tomo" is the first furikake ever created in Japan, manufactured and sold by Futaba Co., Ltd., a seasoning and food manufacturer in Kumamoto Prefecture. It is said to have been devised by pharmacist Suekichi Yoshimaru during the Taisho era, originally created by powdering fish bones to supplement calcium deficiency. Its simple and gentle flavor based on sardines, sesame, and green laver has been cherished on Japanese dining tables for over 100 years. It is great sprinkled directly on plain rice, as a filling for rice balls, or as an accent in lunch boxes.
