Bellflower

A perennial plant of the Campanulaceae family that is widely cultivated as a horticultural product in various parts of Japan and China, it produces beautiful purple or white bell-shaped flowers from summer to autumn. The medicinal part is the root, which contains bellflower saponin as an active ingredient and is used in various herbal medicines. It has the effect of clearing phlegm, relieving coughs, and suppressing throat inflammation.

Ipecac

It is a small herbaceous shrub of the Rubiaceae family that is mainly found in Brazil in South America, and grows to a height of about 30-60 cm, sending out woody runners. The medicinal part is the bead-shaped root, whose active ingredient contains alkaloids such as emetine, which promotes mucus secretion in the airways and makes it easier to break down phlegm.

Ephedra

It is an evergreen herbaceous shrub of the Ephedra family found in China, Inner Mongolia, etc. It produces green stems similar to horsetail that grow to a height of about 30 cm and produce small yellow flowers in early summer. The medicinal part is the above-ground stem, whose active ingredients include alkaloids such as ephedrine, which has a bronchodilatory effect and has a cough relieving effect.

Carrot

It is a different species from the common edible ginseng, also known as Panax ginseng or Korean ginseng, and is a perennial plant of the Araliaceae family native to northeastern China and Korea, cultivated in various places. In spring, it produces a single stem about 60 cm tall with 3 to 4 whorls of leaves, and in early summer it produces small white flowers. The medicinal part is the root, excluding the fine roots, or the roots lightly boiled, and contains active ingredients such as saponins called ginsenosides, which have expectorant properties and have been used in China, the Korean peninsula, and Japan since ancient times.
